Dreams can have many interpretations—but only one is correct. According to dream analyst Erna Elisabeth Westerlund, the days of choosing the interpretation that “feels right” are over. Dream analysis is now a precise science.
Symbolism in dreams, she says, is often overrated. “Pay attention to the color of the dream. That’s usually more meaningful in the big picture.”
When interpreting dreams, she emphasizes the importance of going all in. “If you dream of a particular person,” she explains, “that might influence the meaning, even if the person isn’t important in and of themselves.”
“Here’s an example,” says Westerlund. “Let’s say you dream you’re walking along the edge of a blue swimming pool. Two dolphins are swimming in the water. Suddenly, you step on a bar of soap and slip into the pool. You flail a bit, but the dolphins help you back onto dry land.”
She breaks it down:
• The soap represents purity.
• Struggling in the water symbolizes trouble in your love life.
• The color blue most likely means you're running late.
“Okay,” we nod. “What about the dolphins?”
“Exactly,” says Westerlund. “The dolphins are a trap. They’re there to separate good dream interpreters from bad ones. They’re completely irrelevant.”
“Phew,” we exhale. “So, what does the dream mean?”
“It means you’re having problems in your love life,” says Westerlund. “But honestly—who hasn’t? Also, if you don’t get up soon, you’re going to be late for work.”
