Fire Chief Burnt Fingers of the Smalltown Fire Department urges people to stay far away from dangerous fires.
"Rescue, alert, extinguish" is a handy little rhyme for what to do in case of fire — but sometimes the best move is just to get the hell out.
"Fire is no joke," says Fire Chief Burnt Fingers of the Smalltown Fire Department. "Even when we show up to put it out, things can still go very wrong."
We’re seated by a gas grill outside the Smalltown fire station with Chief Fingers and his loyal companion, Flame.
This dog is worth his weight in gold," says Fingers, pointing to Flame. "He starts barking the moment someone lights a grill nearby."
"Okay, but summer and grilling kind of go together," we venture carefully. "Plus, you know, a few beers."
"I’m on board with the beers," says Fingers. "But open flames are dangerous. Then we have to drop everything and come extinguish it — and that means no beers for us. Honestly, people would be better off eating shrimp than those soggy meat scraps left behind after we’ve hosed the whole thing down."
