Dr. Edgar Rolf Hairloss was originally trained as a hairdresser, but landed a job as a general practitioner after his salon went bankrupt.
“If the current trend continues, we’ll soon see a majority of actual doctors in these positions,” says Monica Smallpox, head of the Association of General Practitioners, to Smalltown Magazine. “In the past five years, the percentage of unqualified hires has increased by over 20%, but from 2026 we hope to start hiring trained medical professionals again.”
“The pandemic hit us hard,” adds Deputy Chair Carve Slow-Witted. “Suddenly we needed a lot more doctors, so we started recruiting from other industries.”
Dr. Edgar Rolf Hairloss is one of those who joined during the pandemic, and has now worked as a GP for nearly five years. After his salon went bankrupt during Smalltown’s shutdown, he was offered a position as a family doctor — something both he and his patients have grown surprisingly fond of.
“I didn’t know much about doctor stuff when I started, so I mainly handed out sick notes,” Hairloss tells us. “There was still a lot of haircutting involved, though. But I’m not that young anymore, and my hands aren’t too steady, so it’s mostly bandages and plasters these days. And, of course, more sick notes. Those are pretty easy to write.”
