Starting next year, tourists will need a credit card in hand just to enter Smalltown.
Smalltown’s new tourist tax will officially kick in on January 1st, 2026 — and retroactively, just to be sure. That’s according to Deputy for Unwanted Tourism, Wendy Wombwell, who confirms that invoices for previous years will be sent out “when someone figures out the paperwork.”
The tax will amount to 5% of each visitor’s monthly income plus VAT. As a result, tourists will be required to bring a tax return and all relevant financial documents when entering Smalltown.
Foreign cruise passengers who arrive without a tax statement will be greeted at the dock by the Tax Authority and subjected to a full-body search — for loose cash.
Motorhome tourists will face an additional charge estimated at 2% of the vehicle’s value, based on how fancy their kitchen setup looks.
“Tourists are expensive,” says Wendy Wombwell, squinting into the middle distance. “We supply toilet paper for these people, and with inflation being what it is, who knows what a single roll will cost by July.”
