Crossing the Sea in a Fishing Boat
These guys are feeling the resistance struggle in their bones, 80 years after Smalltown’s liberation
The waves are three meters high. Water crashes over the gunwales. The crew is tossed around like loose fenders — without spilling a single drop of beer.
“Didn’t think the sea would kick up this much,” says Captain Nytteby, wiping salt from his face.
Aboard the fishing boat, the crew clings to anything that’s bolted down — just like the resistance fighters supposedly did during the war. That’s where their shared interest lies: the drama of the World War II resistance movement.
“So you were kind of sailing in the footsteps of the resistance fighters?” asks Smalltown Magazine, tagging along for the sake of the story.
“Not really,” replies Nytteby, ducking behind the helm to avoid a cold shower rising from the sea. Too late.
The crew — or “the guys,” as they like to call themselves — sit steady on the side benches, each with a can of beer. Faces tough, jaws tight.
“You must be feeling the same adrenaline as those resistance heroes, zigzagging through enemy waters with their hearts in their throats,” we offer, trying to set the mood.
“You must’ve gotten on the wrong boat,” says Kråssnes, cracking open another beer with one hand. “This was supposed to be a crab run. But with waves like this, I’m betting Nytteby turns us back to Smalltown any minute now. In weather like this, we prefer an open-air pub.”
