Starting next year, you can build your own Christmas tree—out of recycled materials.
Smalltown's City Council has announced a new deposit1 scheme for Christmas trees beginning in 2026. The deposit is set at £15 per meter, and return machines will be installed at strategic spots in every district.
“We’re introducing the Christmas tree deposit system to boost reuse rates in Smalltown,” says Straight Left's deputy leader Sveinalf Messbottom, who’s backed by junior consultant Screwy McHead from Sponvika Recycling Inc.
“This is solid Straight Left policy,” Messbottom continues enthusiastically. “In the long term, the environmental department will also set up stations where residents can buy last year’s trees at a reduced price.”
“But the needles fall off old trees,” we point out.
“That’s been handled,” interrupts Screwy McHead with pride. “The guys at the recycling center sweep up the fallen needles and package each tree with a suitable bag of needles and a tube of glue.”
“Exactly,” says Sveinalf Messbottom. “This is what we fight for in Straight Left—more freedom for families. Starting next year, families can choose: buy a fresh tree, or spend the pre-Christmas season lovingly gluing together a reused one.”
1 A deposit is an extra charge added to products like bottles, cans—and now, Christmas trees. You get the deposit back when you return the item. It’s a core part of Smalltown’s sustainability policy.
